A Special Message for All Our Donors...(continued)

"My Grade Improved from a D to an A!"

My name is Ingrid Camberos. I am 14 and I have just started high school. When I was younger, we lived in the city of Torrance. We had a house and my father had a successful gardening business.

When I was three years old my father and older sister were killed in a car accident. My mom was by herself with me and my sisters. My father’s business went under; we lost our house and we had to depend on government aid to pay rent and get enough food.

My mom struggled for yea rs while attending college, but earned her Associate of Science Degree and teaching credential. She got a job at the Boys & Girls Club as a preschool teacher. When I was 9 years old, she started taking me to the Club. I became a member of the Torch Club, a leadership program that helped us deal with everyday life experiences.

When I was 11, the Boys & Girls Club sent me to Washington DC to participate in a fishing derby. I won first place in the nation and was on ESPN!

In middle school, I was having trouble with my math. After getting tutoring at the Club, my grade improved from a D to an A!

This year I got accepted to the high school at Harbor College Teacher Prep Academy. My goal is to become a doctor and specialize in cancer treatment because both my grandparents died of cancer and I have a cousin who is suffering from cancer now. The Club is helping me get to the next step; they take me on college tours, and are helping me plan my career.

If it weren’t for the Club I would never have won the National Bass fishing championship and been on ESPN, seen Niagara Falls or gone to New York and Washington DC.
